Event Description

Silver Surfers’ Day is the largest, national, digital literacy campaign for older people in the UK and it’s been running annually since 2002. SSD provides local people and organisations with all the resources and support they need to open their doors to older people and offer them a taste of digital technology.

For SSD2010, special focus will be on encouraging and supporting intergenerational SSD partnerships. They are particularly keen to grow their‘Schools for Silver Surfers‘ initiative, which resulted in 66 partnerships between local schools and sheltered housing schemes in 2009.

Digital Unite are working hard on all aspects of SSD2010, and hope soon to be able to announce some exciting new ideas to make it even bigger and better. In the meantime, make a date in your diary and start thinking about what you can do.

You may want to host an event on your estate, or just invite a friend round and teach them to surf. Find out more from their website

I received the following update which those of you who have links with your local school may find useful

Update to E-zine from Digital Unite: 07 December, 2009

With fortuitous timing, just as we announce that for SSD2010, our special focus will be on intergenerational partnerships, including our Schools for Silver Surfers initiative, BT have introduced their BT Internet Ranger Schools Award.

The aim of this award is to encourage schools, or a group of schools, to organise events where young people, up to the age of 16, use their ICT skills to help other people learn about computers and how to surf the internet.

This type of event is very rewarding for everyone involved. As well as the many benefits for the learners, students gain new insights and confidence from the experience of teaching. For schools, it is a great opportunity to build community cohesion and you could win 5000 pounds!

But, you need to act quickly because the closing date is Friday 15th January and your event must take place before the end of the 2009/10 school year.

You will find more information and an application form at: http://BTinternetrangers.notlong.com
