Just listening to Woman's Hour and the AA is to launch an initiative at the end of Feb to address lack of confidence about certain aspects of driving among drivers of all ages. In the same programme it was pointed out that women drivers over 65 are becoming worse and by the time they reach 80 they are the worst drivers, if you exclude young men (18 - 25). Does anyone on HW think their driving has deteriorated?

Hi Margaret,
Do they mention how much they will charge for this? Call me a sceptic, but I have a sneaky feeling that it's a money-grabbing ploy !!

Cheers

Hi Margaret,

Do you really think anybody will admit that their driving has deteriorated.
I think not.

Margaret I think my driving has changed over the years as I seem to be far more conscious of speed and speed limits.
That speed camera detector I mentioned on this site really has had an effect in a positive way.
My neck and shoulders are not as flexible as they were and so I try and avoid those junctions that are at an acute angle to the road I'm joining. Another thing I have noticed with older drivers and that is they take longer to make a decision especially when they are entering a roundabout or emerging from a side road. I think to myself why should I be different to others of the same age so I am more conscious of that possible weakness. I don't see why women should be that different from men. A bad driver at 40 will still be a bad driver at 70. --- Hank.

Hi hank,
I have a problem with my neck, spondalosis, and find that if I come across a junction like that, I take my visor, that has a mirror attached, and turn it toward the oncoming traffic....works a treat for me.
Cheers

Well, I'll own up to my driving having changed.....whether it's better or worse, I leave others to judge!
I think I am more careful but others may say I am hesitant. I drive more slowly than I used to because I rarely have to rush these days......but others may call me a slow coach. I have not been involved in any accidents......but I may have left a trail of devastation in my wake of which I am blissfully unaware!

My driving instructor daughter says I could do with a refresher course and I should read the 'new' version of the Highway Code.....so I will take her advice. According to the AA there will be a normal lesson fee but the refresher lessons will be focusing on individual problems instead of passing the driving test.

I love your sun visor hint John I'll definitely try that - Marg

Have just seen the discussion on driving and I must admit my driving is not what it used to be and I have thought on having a few lessons to get my confidence back. I have suddenly got a phobia about certain roundabouts around this area due to the road markings that keep being changed and the fact that everyone seems to be in such a hurry trying to beat the traffic lights. I may even get my 18yr old Grandson to teach me as he is a very careful driver and would not take any uneccessary risks. If all else fails I will take the bus!! June Thomas
